Frame construction Chapron versus Oord

As mentioned before, it would have been much better to strengthen the car frame construction a lot in case of a convertible modification. As a less-than-ideal solution Mister Chapron assembled two door lockers at the driver’s door and the front passenger’s door, so that the combination of door lockers / doors / door hinge contributes a little bit to stability.
This should be seen in common as very critical (accord ika (Institute for Motor Vehicles at RWTH Aachen University), “Concept of Structures Motor Vehicles”). It may happen, that with moderate to high load micro-cracks/line of rests will appear concerning fatigue of material, generated through cyclic twists of the Chapron-frame. The remarkable, diagonal twist of the Chapron-Frame can be reproduced and seen easily thereby, that you drive and park the car with the right front wheel on a really high road curb stone (appr. 25cm). At this juncture the car should be parked on the curbstone with the front right wheel alone, 4 passengers should sit in the car, driver’s door and passenger’s door should be open, Engine hood and boot lit should be opened and the car should be lowered (bottom height adjustment). In this condition it is impossible, to open or close the driver’s door, it sags about 1 to 1,5cm.

The well-known constructive weak points of the Citroen DS Chapron-Convertible are more than far exceeding through the Original-Oord-Convertible with extensive, extreme stable strengthening made out of 2mm(!) steel in longitudinal-, cross- and diagonal-direction:
– Square-tube (2mm steel wall thickness) for cross stay,
– Z- and U-strengthening (gusset plates) made out of 2mm(!) steel, in the overlapping of longitudinal-, cross- and diagonal-panels the thickness is 6mm plus the thickness of the Citroen original panel,
– Exercise test with more than 1000kg (here surprisingly 1,5mm bending of the frame only),
– Doors, trunk lit and front lit will be opened to avoid a reinforcing effect,
– Bending/torsion measured at 8 measurement points at the frame body,
– Realization of the extreme, exact, static and dynamic tests as well as the Extreme-Driving test was performed from the Dutch RDW (RDW = TÜV Organization in NL)Official technical supervisors for vehicles.

A fresh restored Chapron-Convertible (in accordance with Chapron standards) showed during a loading of 600kg (only) a sag of 4,6mm! ( With a loading of 1000kg a breakdown of the Chapron frame might be assumed). The “Original-Oord-Convertibles” are suited excellent for a holiday trip of a family with kids and without any restriction for a simultaneously usage of a trailer/caravan.
Remark: The above listed, extreme strengthenings are part of each Original-Oord-Convertible!

Oord Steckverdeck á la Reutter

The Oord-Folding-, Plug-Top á la Reutter is rough sympathized with „Reutter Citroen DS Cabriolet“:
– Oord-Convertible-Top extends about 4 doors (Front- and Rear-Doors), such as Reutter (see pictures 1, 2 and 6),
– Oord-Convertible Top let the top rods, such as Reutter, in a folding top case behind the rear seats (see pictures 4, 11),
– Oord-Convertible Top such as Reutter are using both a stuck-, high end B-pillar (see pictures 4 and 11),
-Oord-Convertible Top shows in contrast to Reutter a flattish cover of the folding top case (see pictures 5 and 12),
– Oord-Convertible Top do not have an integrated sliding roof in opposition to Reutter (see pictures 3 and 7),
– Oord-Convertible Top do not have an electrical opening- and closing mechanism with electrical motors in opposition to Reutter, but it must be controlled manually (see pictures 2 to 12).

After Unlocking the the front piece of the convertible top inside you can roll up the front piece and the top without any problems rearwards.
The folding top fabric is supported adequate by 2 crossbars.

Now the crossbars will be dismantled. They are simply sticked form-locking and can be dimatled quickly manually. The crossbars will be placed space-saving on the ground (in the interspace behind the front seats and bevor the added floor assemby-cross-bracing). Now the folding rods will be dislocked from the frame of the front window and the screw connection of the folding rods will be dimantled manually (butterfly nut) from the sticked B-pillar without mechanical tools.

Now the sticked B-pillars will be dislocked without mechanical tools manually (butterfly nuts respectively knurled srews) und dismantled. The B-pillars will be placed in the interspace as well like the crossbars.

After the B-Pillar was dismatled, the rolled folding fabric with the rear window will be placed into the folding top case. Now the folding rods left and right had to be placed on the top of the stowed folding fabric. To avoid an unwanted opening of the folding rods and following damages of thehigh gloss paint finish during a „One-Person-Handling“ the folding rods are fixed with adequate rubber bands.

Covering of the folding top case with a soft-top, which is fixed with snap-fastener made from INOX. These snap-fasteners will resist wind loading coming from high speed driving.

Finally the heads of the B-pillars left and right will be covered with the relevant caps and fixed with screws manually.

None distructive crack detection

A simple, but anyhow very effective crack detection method is the liquid penetration test. After wetting of the penetrant (German idiom “Konstrater”) with strong crawling power and after consideration of the relevant residence time, the surface will be cleaned, dried and then the application of the developer will follow. The high color contrast between Developer and the penetrant enables statements of possible cracks straightforward. In several Chapron-frames cracks (partly spaciously) could be verified (A- and B-pillar a.s.o.). The crack detection does not harm a following, extensive reinforcement of the frame.
